Projection, Shadow & Light Workshops
Step into a world of light, shadow and moving image. Our projection workshops invite participants to experiment with analogue and digital tools — from magic lanterns and illuminated screens to contemporary projection technologies — to create bold, playful visual artworks.
Delivered in schools, museums and galleries, these hands-on sessions are led by experienced disabled and Deaf artists and facilitators. Each workshop is designed as an open, welcoming space where curiosity leads the way and discovery happens through making.
Participants explore how light behaves, how colour transforms a surface, and how shadows can become expressive visual language. Using simple materials alongside specialist equipment, groups create silhouettes, projections and large-scale collaborative images that shift and animate in real time.
What Participants Experience
Shadow & Silhouette Making
Inspired by historic shadowgraphy techniques, participants learn how to create striking silhouettes using hands, body shapes and cut forms. Working with illuminated screens, they discover how gesture, movement and scale change what an audience sees.
Projection Playgrounds
Experiment with layered projection using lenses, transparencies, objects and digital inputs. Combine analogue devices with contemporary tools to build living images made from colour, texture and motion.
Light & Colour Experiments
Mix filters, materials and surfaces to see how colour travels and transforms. Test, adjust and remix — there is no single correct outcome, only exploration.
Movement & Gesture with Light
Some sessions include gentle guided movement and gesture work, exploring how hands and bodies can communicate visually through shadow and projection — whether or not participants know sign language.
Accessible, Flexible, Adaptable
Workshops can be adapted to different ages, access needs and settings — from small classroom sessions to large public museum events. Formats range from short taster activities to in-depth creative labs.
We regularly provide:
- BSL-led delivery with voice interpretation for non-signers
- Relaxed participation — observe or join in at your own pace
- Sensory-aware environments where possible
- Optional chill-out spaces with low lighting and comfort supports (where venues allow)
A Space to Explore and Experiment
These workshops are designed as creative playgrounds with light. Participants are encouraged to try ideas, experiment freely and enjoy the unexpected results. No prior experience is needed — just curiosity and a willingness to play.
